by American Educational Products
A common felsic intrusive igneous rock, granite has a granular and phaneritic (easily distinguishable matrix grains) texture. Its color is typically white, pink, or gray, though their minerological makeup plays a large roll in what colors are present.
Like most stones, granite is a natural source of radiation, through its constituent alkali feldspar, of which the radioactive isotope Potassium-40 is a part of.
Granite sees use in a number of different applications, from sculptures, memorials, and gravestones, to dimension stones, flooring tiles, and as curling stones. The last are traditionally made from Ailsa Craig granite, from Ailsa Craig in Scotland. This particular form of the rock is exceptionally rare, with curling stones costing upwards of $1,500 USD. It also finds use as an industry, with granite and marble-related industries considered to be amongst the oldest in the world, known to exist as far back as Ancient Egypt, and possibly further.
Each rock or mineral specimen measures approximately 1-2 inches in length along its longest side.
