Muscovite, also known as common mica, is the most common form of mica. It is often found in granites, pegmatites, metamorphic rock, and as in this case, schists. Muscovite itself is in high demand for the manufacturing of fireproofing and insulating materials, though in the 16th century it was used in medieval Russia as a much cheaper alternative in windows to glass.
The name of the schist is derived from what their mineral constituents are. This particular schist features the mica varietal Muscovite, so it is called Muscovite Mica Schist, or just Mica Schist. Because of the way the schist is formed by heat and pressure, the individual grains of the minerals are drawn out into flaky scales, capable of being seen with the naked eye, and can fairly easily be split off into flakes or slabs.
