Sometimes called “Amazon Stone”, Amazonite is a green variety of microcline feldspar. A mineral of limited occurrence, it was formerly obtained from an area in the Ilmensky Mountains of Russia, where it occurred in granitic rocks. Recently, however, Amazonite of high quality has been found in Pike’s Peak, Colorado.
Due to the bright green color that it produces after being polished, Amazonite will sometimes be cut and used as a gemstone, though it is difficult to work with, as it fractures easily. The source of its color was a considered a mystery for some time, with many people believing that it was due to the presence of copper, which often has blue and green colors. Recent studies of the Amazonite seem to suggest that it is actually due to small amounts of lead and water locked within the feldspar. Each rock measures approx. 1-2 inches in length.Â
