Mica can be recognized by its perfect cleavage. Its crystals can be split into very thin, flexible sheets. Colorless Mica is called muscovite. It is alumino silicate with potassium: KAl3Si3O10(OH)2. Muscovite was once used to make windows in Russia, which explains its Russian name. It is a poor conductor of heat and electricity, which makes it an important insulator in electrical equipment. It is also used to make windows for iron stoves. Dark colored mica is called biotite. It is alumino silicate with potassium, iron and magnesium: K(Mg,Fe)3AlSi3O10(OH)2.
