Large Polished Ammonite Fossil

 

This beautiful ammonite fossil is polished cleanly on its upper side and sides. The ram’s horn-shaped spiral has 4 layers. The dividing walls of the individual chambers of the shell can still be seen on the inner layers of the spiral. This fossil has very minor imperfections in the form of chips. This fossil measures approximately 3.75 inches in diameter along the longest part. 

Ammonites are an extinct group of marine invertebrate animals that are mollusks but are more closely related to current sea animals like octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish. The fossils we find today are excellent index fossils. Often an ammonite fossil can be linked to a specific geological time period by examining the rock layer in which the fossil is found. Ammonite fossils are commonly used as fashionable pieces in jewelry and as collectibles. Each fossil is unique and has its own beauty.
