Disease is a fear that mankind has lived with for thousands of years. Its ability to appear seemingly at the drop of a hat and spread so rapidly that it kills thousands of people in a matter of weeks is not something to be trifled with. Epidemics may have changed over the centuries, like the different variations of influenza, but they are still happening even today. We have even seen a recurrence of the Bubonic plague, when in 2014 it killed 40 people in Madagascar.
The discovery of bacteria only occurred approximately 100 years ago, when the French scientist Louis Pasteur noticed that some diseases were caused by tiny microscopic life forms that couldn’t be classified as plants or animals. Eventually called bacteria, these small life forms would get into the body, causing massive damage to the cells. The science of bacteriology would eventually emerge from Pasteur’s work, and since then scientists have managed to discover hundreds of different bacteria that are capable of causing diseases. Along with finding the bacteria, they also managed to figure out ways to combat some of them, resulting in immunizations to help prevent the proliferation of bacterial diseases.
This poster depicts 8 different harmful bacteria, and examines the diseases that they are capable of causing in plants and animals. Each bacteria features a photograph of a stained microscope slide, rendered in extremely high detail.
