Stirling Engine w/Wooden Base
by American Scientific
Originally invented in 1816 by the Scottish clergyman and engineer, Robert Stirling, the Stirling Engine model is a unique engine that uses heat, and is perfect for demonstrating to students how thermal expansion and cold shrinkage can create enough energy to power an engine.
This particular Stirling engine uses a closed-cycle thermodynamic system, which means that the working fluid (or air, in this case) is permanently contained within the system, compressing and expanding it at varying temperatures to create heat energy.
This particular model is powered by a small alcohol lamp that gets placed beneath the power cylinder. As the flame heats the cylinder, the air within begins to expand, pushing the piston and causing the flywheel to turn, generating power and causing the four LED’s to light up.
Set on a wooden base, the Stirling Engine is lightweight, making it extremely portable. and comes with replacement parts for the pistons, the cylinders and a few other parts, as well as the Allen wrenches needed to change them out. This Stirling Engine comes complete with a teachers guide that includes student activities and knowledge quizzes.
Together, the engine and its wooden base measure 18x8x9cm (LxHxW).
