Motor Neuron Diorama Model

Fully three-dimensional, this motor neuron model has been magnified more than 2,500 times, allowing students to see some of the extremely fine details of one of the most important pieces of the nervous system. The silk-screened acrylic background depicts the neuron in its natural setting. The model features part of the membranous envelope cut away, exposing the cytological ultrastructure, organelles, and inclusions within the cell body, with each structure depicted in contrasting color. A small section of the axon can be removed, exposing not only the enveloping myelin sheath and neuro-lemma, but also the Schwann cell that formed them. The neuron’s dendrites extend into the background, with the synaptic vesicles that carry neurotransmitters capable of being seen on the diorama by means of a cutaway view.

A 19 individual features are numbered and identified on the included illustrated key. Mounted on a hardwood base, the overall dimensions of the diorama are 17x18x11 inches (43x45x28cm).
