Newton’s Apples – Pack of Six

The weight of each apple is 1 Newton, or 102 grams. Used to calculate force, a Newton is the unit of measurement used to determine how much force is required to accelerate an object with a mass of 1kg at a rate of 1 meter per second, squared.

Based in Newton’s Second Law, where it is stated that an object will accelerate in the direction of the force, and the more force exerted on a given mass, the more the object is accelerated. Therefore, Force = mass x acceleration. When applied to the concept of a Newton, the basic equation becomes 1N = 1kg x m/s².

Each of the six apples has a diameter of 102mm, and a height of 78mm. An elastic string is attached to the top of the apples to assist with suspended it during experiments, and “1 Newton” is imprinted into the side of each one.

The set of six apples comes complete with 5 different experiments. All of the experiments come with a list of materials required, and detailed instructions on how to proceed. They also include an explanation as to why the experiment happened the way it did, as well as some follow-up questions designed to provoke further thought and discussion.
