Â
Quartz minerals are made of silica and oxygen, often with other trace elements present. These other trace elements are what give quartz different colors. When quartz minerals are opaque and have crystal structures so small they must be seen with a microscope, they are known as jasper. Since jasper is opaque, it relies on its color and pattern for its beauty.      Â
Jasper is often referred to in the Bible as a stone that was highly prized. In the book of Exodus, jasper is named as one of the stones in the high priest’s breastplate. In Revelation, jasper is said to be the stone used to build the walls of New Jerusalem.
