Natural Rainbow Optical Calcite Iceland Spar Rhomb AA Grade, 1.5-3 oz Crystal Mineral Rock Specimen
10 in stock
This variety of calcite was extracted from a new mine located at a recently discovered cave in Mexico. This optical calcite, also known as Iceland Spar, is a naturally rhombohedron crystal forming mineral with double refraction and while crystal clear, scatters brilliant hues of the rainbow when positioned in different light settings. This magnificent specimen is AA grade quality, meaning there is some cleavage and noticeable inclusions within the stone, but is still fine specimen quality. Some optics properties can be examined using a laser pointer or laying the rhomb flat over writing. Double refraction and polarization of light are topics within the educational realm. What better way to get students involved with science and nature than by combining the two? Optical calcite makes a beautiful accent piece for the home or office as well. Placing it near a window on a sunny day will create a stunning display of color within the vicinity.Â
Color of the calcite may vary from pale yellow to completely transparent, but will display amazing optical properties, nonetheless. Specimen will weigh 1.5 to 3 ounces. As this is a naturally formed crystal, size, shape, and inclusions may vary slightly from the ones pictured. Average size is approximately 1 inch in length. Some specimens may have minor flaws from the extraction process.
