Selenite is one of four crystaline mineral varieties of gypsum and is named after the Greek word for ‘Moon’. Many specimens appear glass like with a pearly white or silky luster. It’s transparent, light admitting properties have made it useful for window panes, such as those in Santa Sabina in Rome. It’s crystals commonly form in mica-like sheets and can appear columnar. Some times called satin spar for it’s smooth, satin finish; it is formed as an evaporative mineral. Selenite may disintegrate if submerged in water. The healing properties of selinite are said to deliver clarity of mind, by cleansing the aura of negative energy.
One of the many wonders of nature, your samples may differ in size, color, and shape from those pictured.
