Aluminum Archimedes Principle Apparatus
by United Scientific
This version of the Archimedes apparatus consists of a solid metal cylinder and a close-fitting metal bucket. Each of them have a hook attached to them, and the bucket also has a hanger allowing it to be suspended from either end.
Also referred to as a “bucket and cylinder” experiment, the Archimedes apparatus allows for the volume of an object to be measured by taking measurements of the volume of liquid that is displaced once that object is submerged, and calculating the buoyancy of an object that has been immersed in a liquid.
In simpler terms, for any object that is immersed in a liquid, the volume of that liquid that is increased is equal to the volume of the submerged portion of the object. If the entire object is submerged, then the displaced liquid is equal to the total volume of the object.
