Blue Newtonian Putty – Dilatant Non-Newtonian Fluid
7 in stock
Looking for a fun fidget toy that can also be educational? This putty is great hands on play and slightly mysterious. Children will be wondering how this putty is able to shift in shape and texture. They will actually be examining the properties of a non-Newtonian fluid right between their fingers!
What is a non-Newtonian Fluid?
A non-Newtonian fluid is a fluid that does not follow Newton’s Law of Viscosity. Viscosity is a measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow. Normally, a fluid’s viscosity (or thickness) only changes with temperature or pressure. You will find that most liquids abide by Newton’s law. But some do not! Putty, for example, is a non-Newtonian fluid. When you apply force to a normal liquid, such as water, its viscosity does not change – this is Newton’s law. But try using a hammer on putty. Where putty was once slipping through your fingers as any other liquid would while at rest, it is now hard and shattering! This strange liquid only follows the rules, until stress is applied, but don’t worry! The putty will soon return to a thinner, liquidized state as it was before undergoing stress.
