A detrital rock, Arkose is essentially made up of particles of rock that have been derived from other rocks through the natural processes of weathering and erosion. A type of sandstone, Arkose is typically formed by a combination of feldspar, quartz, mica, calcite, and iron oxide.
Generally formed by the weathering and erosion of feldspar-rich deposits of igneous or metamorphic rocks, the sediments have to be deposited rapidly or in a cold or arid environment that prevents the feldspar from undergoing large amounts of chemical weathering and subsequent decomposition. Chemical weathering simply introduces biological agents such as the acidic products of microbial or plant-root metabolism, combined with natural weathering phenomena such as wind and water.
By avoiding these in on the large scale, Arkose has been designated as a textually immature sedimentary rock. The most renowned of them is the Ayers Rock, in the Amadeus Basin of central Australia. Each rock measures approx. 1-2 inches in length.Â
