Description

Fluorite Octahedron Rock 1cm
Information Card Included

The chemical name for fluorite is calcium fluoride, CaF2. It is also known as fluorspar. Because it melts easily, it was named after the Greek word fluere, which means “to flow.” Its low melting point makes it useful as a flux in smelting.
Fluorite is also mined commercially to manufacture hydrofluoric acid, which is important in the plastics industry.
Fluorite crystals usually forms in cubes, and less often in eight-sided crystals called octahedrons. The crystal shape, or habit, is influenced by the temperature of formation. Octahedrons are believed to be formed at higher temperatures than cubes. Fluorite is found in cavities of sedimentary rock and range in all colors of the spectrum.
