A lubricant with low volatility, vacuum grease is used for applications that require a low-pressure environment, such as glass vacuum systems that are found in a laboratory. When applied to the rim of a bell jar before seating it on a vacuum pump plate, the grease helps to fill in any gaps between the jar and plate, forming a proper seal all the way around.

The grease can also be used to help prevent the seizing of stopcocks, as well as achieve proper seals with O-rings and gaskets.
