Hydrometer 3 Piece Set – Includes Heavy & Light Liquid Hydrometers and Jar
10 in stock
This 3-piece Hydrometer Set includes a heavy liquids hydrometer, a light liquids hydrometer and the glass jar required to measure the specific gravity (relative density) of liquids. It is perfect for general industrial purposes and classroom demonstrations.Â
A hydrometer is an instrument used for measuring the relative density of liquids using the concept of buoyancy. Great for STEM science education and classroom demonstrations. When a hydrometer is placed in low-density liquid such as kerosene, gasoline or alcohol, the hydrometer will sink deeper. When a hydrometer is placed in high-density liquid such as brine, milk or acid, it doesn’t sink so far.
The heavy liquids hydrometer measures a range from 1.00 to 2.00 in .01 increments. The light liquids hydrometer measures a range from .70 to 1.00 in .01 increments. Both hydrometers are an approx 30 cm long cylindrical glass stem with a bulb weighted to make it float upright and includes a plastic storage tube. The hydrometer jar is a clear glass cylinder measuring approx 53 mm outside diameter x 300 mm height. This flint glass jar is non-graduated and has volume of approx 350 mL. Pour your liquid to be tested inside and use the appropriate hydrometer.
Hydrometers for a more specialized use might bear other specific names depending on their intended use. For instance, a Lactometer is used to check the purity of cow’s milk, Saccharometer measures the concentration of sugar in a solution, and an Alcoholmeter indicates the alcoholic strength in liquids (also known as proof). These specialized hydrometers may also use a different scale of measurement.
