Kaolin is a rock that is rich in kaolinite, a clay mineral. It is also known as china clay, kalaba, calaba, calabachop, and eko. The rock kaolin is known for its ability to not only induce, but to accelerate, the clotting of blood, and in 2008, the US Naval Medical Research Institute successfully tested a kaolinite-derived aluminosilicate infusion in traditional gauze, a type of gauze that is known commercially as QuikClot Combat Gauze.
Other uses for kaolin have included being the main component of porcelain, as a spray to deter insects from damaging crops and preventing sun scald to apples, and as an indicator in radiological dating, as kaolinite has been known to contain trace amounts of uranium and thorium.
Each rock or mineral specimen measures approximately 1-2 inches in length along its longest side.
