Also known as methyl alcohol, wood alcohol, wood naphtha, methyl hydrate or wood spirits, Methanol is the simplest of alcohols, and is a light, colorless liquid with an odor that is distinctive, yet reminiscent of ethanol. Unlike ethanol, however, methanol is unfit for consumption. It is a polar liquid, and can be found in antifreeze, fuel, various solvents, and used in the denaturing of ethanol (making it unfit for consumption). It can be produced naturally by way of anaerobic metabolism of various bacteria, or artificially.
