The lightest of all hydrocarbons, it is a petroleum fraction that is made up of mostly C₅ and C₆ hydrocarbons, with solvent properties. As a liquid, it is clear and colorless, with no fluorescent properties, and is insoluble in water. Its odor is reminiscent of gasoline or kerosene. Petroleum ether is also referred to as VM&P Naphtha.
