When mixed into an aqueous solution (0.1g of powder with 100ml of water), phenol red can indicate whether or not another solution has a pH of between 6.8 (yellow color) and 8.2 (red color).

0.5g of powder will make 500ml of 0.04% solution, and the entire 5g bottle will make up to 5000ml (5 liter)
