For a long time, the need to specify an exact quantity or amount of something is imperative. Things we take for granted, like the quantity of goods in a recipe, or for sale at a store, are sold either by the piece, or by weight. To achieve that, however, we have to measure it against a known quantity.

The best way to do that is to use a balance of some sort. The mathematical balance was one of the first of its kind, and did precisely that. In one pan, you put your unknown, and then your known weight goes in the other.

This kit contains enough materials to build 24 separate mathematical balances out of a durable foam. The teacher’s guide includes not only instructions how to build the balances, but also a number of different activities and experiments that can be done in the classroom. It also includes follow-up questions that can be discussed in the classroom.
