The Pisa Tower Engineering Puzzle – Classroom Kit
by Koontz Educational
The Pisa Tower experiment will take you through a number of different experiments involving center of mass, which is more commonly referred to as center of gravity. Using the famous Pisa Tower as an example, students will be able to not only experiment with their own educational version of the Tower, as well as doing some practical experiments like trying to stand up from a chair without leaning forward. This kit contains enough material to build 24 towers, as well as an instruction guide and teacher’s manual.
A famous tourist attraction, the Pisa Tower is located in the city of Pisa, Italy. Designed by Bonanno Pisano, it was started in 1173 and took over 200 years to complete. By the time the third story was complete, builders realized that the tower was not just sinking, but leaning to one side. How did they manage to omplete the tower, let alone keep it standing since then? Because the majority of the towers bulk is still firmly in place above its center of gravity. And between 1990-2001, structural renovations were conducted to extend the Pisa Tower’s life by another 600 years.
