The Simple Pendulum Physics Experiment Kit
by Science Supply Solutions
This kit will take you through an explanation of how a pendulum works, and how it can be used to keep time with nothing but a ball and string. The kit includes two pendulum balls, six feet of string, a tape measure, and an activity guide that walks you through the simple-looking, yet deceptively difficult, process of turning a simple pendulum into a rudimentary time-keeping device.
Stripped down to its most basic form, a pendulum is nothing more than a weight that has been suspended from a pivot, and is capable of swinging freely from side to side when given an initial push, keeping a constant amplitude. Because real pendulums are subjected to both friction and air drag, there will naturally be a decrease in amplitude over time.
The pendulum has seen use in a multitude of fields, from timekeeping, demonstrating the rotation of the Earth (Foucault pendulum), the measurement of the acceleration gravity, as an early seismometer for measuring earth tremors, and more. The same principles of the pendulum can also be applied to a metronome, which is used to keep time for musicians.
