by American Educational Products
A plagioclase feldspar mineral, Albite is the sodium endmember, meaning that it is at the extreme end of the sodium series in terms of purity. It is also considered to be a tectosilicate, which is to say that it has a 3D framework of silicate tetrahedrals. Its basic chemical formula is NaAlSi3O8, and is usually a pure white in color, giving it the Latin name of albus.
It is known for often exhibiting crystal twinning, whereby two separate crystals come together to share some of the same points of their crystal latice, in a symmetrical manner. Albite is often found in masses of both granite and pegmatite, in hydrothermal veins.
Each piece of rock or mineral measures approximately 1-2 inches along the longest side.
