by American Educational Products
Derived from iron chromium oxide, Chromite is not only an oxide mineral, but also a part of the spinel group. All members have the general formula of A2+B23+O4-, and follow the cubic, or isometric, crystalline symmetry. Chromite is extremely important from an industrial standpoint, as it is used in the production of chromium, an alloying ingredient used in stainless and tool steels.
Its color ranges from black to brownish black, and brown to brownish black along the thin edges when viewed in transmitted light.
Each rock or mineral specimen measures approximately 1-2 inches in length along its longest side.
