A major constituent mineral found within th Earth’s crust, Plagioclase is an important tool in petrology, which is the study of identifying the composition, origin and evolution of rocks within the igneous family. It is just found on Earth, however. Plagioclase is also a major contributor to the rocks in the highlands of Earth’s moon.

It is not a particular mineral with a specific chemical composition, but rather a solid solution series that is referred to as the plagioclase feldspar series. A solid solution occurs when there are one or more solutes in a solvent, and generally happens when the elements involved are near each other on the periodic table. A solid solution should not be confused with a mechanical mixture, as the mechanical will have a total or partial miscibility gap in solid state. Each rock measures approximately 1-2 inches in length.
