An essential element and mineral for all forms of life, it finds widespread use in the biochemical processes. For metabolic reactions, its compounds function as both fuels (electron donors) and respiratory (oxygen-alternative) materials. In its organic form, Sulfur is present in both the biotin and thiamine vitamins. When organically bonded, it is a component of all proteins in the form of the amino acids cysteine and methionine. Its disulfide bonds are also in part responsible for the mechanical strength and insolubility of keratin (skin, hair, nails, feathers, claws), and the element that is responsible for the pungent odor when those things are burned.
Historically, sulfur has been gathered from volcanic regions such as Sicily. Today, it is most often produced as a side-product of other things, such as the refining of oil. It can still be found in its elemental form around hot springs and in volcanic regions, and is still mined today along the Pacific Ring of Fire from surface deposits, by poorer nations such as Indonesia. Each rock measures approximately 1-2 inches in length.Â
