Radiometer Converts Light Energy into Mechanical Energy

Invented by William Crooke in the 1860’s, the radiometer is a fun and educational science toy.  It demonstrates the conversion of light energy into mechanical energy.  The vanes in the evacuated glass bulb are dark and light in color.  The dark vanes absorb the rays and the light vanes reflect the rays.  It is fascinating to hold it in the sun or to a light bulb and see it spin.  This is a great way to study light energy into mechanical energy.  .

Experience this sphere powered by the sun! The vanes in the Radiometer are alternately dark and light in color. When the light strikes these vanes it transfers heat to each one – but not at the same degree. The lighter vane reflects the rays and the darker vane absorbs the rays. The stronger the light, the more energy there is causing the vanes to spin faster
