Hematite is main ore of iron, is widespread, and the oldest known iron oxide mineral on earth. Hematite comes in variations of black, gray, silver, brown, or red, but when used on a streak plate, the streak is always red (from the iron!) This specimen is a variety that resembles a familiar organ: a kidney. Kidney ore is a nickname given to hematite with a bubbly appearance instead of one with facets. This crystal habit is called botryoidal.
