A crucible is a cup-shaped piece of laboratory equipment used to contain chemical compounds when heating them to very high temperatures.  The lids are typically loose-fitting to allow gases to escape during heating of a sample inside. Includes lid. Nickel crucibles are used in assays involving NaOH or Na₂O₂, which would severely attack porcelain. Nickel crucibles are highly resistant to alkalis and can be used at temperatures up to 600 C / 1472 F.
