A crucible is a cup-shaped piece of laboratory equipment used to contain chemical compounds when heating them to very high temperatures.  The lids are typically loose-fitting to allow gases to escape during heating of a sample inside. Includes lid. Nickel crucibles are used in assays involving NaOH or Na2O2, which would severely attack porcelain. Nickel crucibles are highly resistant to alkalis and can be used at temperatures up to 600 C / 1472 F.
