by American Educational Products
Relatively soft and containing a tar-like substance called bitumin, which gives it its name, Bituminous coal ranges from black to a dark brown in color, often with well-defined bands of bright or dull material within the seams. It is these distinctive sequences which allow this variety of coal to be stratigraphically identified.
An organic sedimentary rock, it is known within the coal mining industry for releasing large amounts of firedamp, a dangerous mixture of gases that is capable of causing underground explosions if their concentrations rose too high. For this reason alone, the extraction of bituminous coal demands the highest possible safety procedures that involve gas monitoring, good ventilation (to vent the gas) and vigilant site management. Each rock measures approximately 1-2 inches in length.Â
