Breccia Rock Mineral – Pack of 2
by American Educational Products
Composed of broken and crushed fragments of rocks and minerals, the components of Breccia have been cemented together by means of a fine-grained matrix. This matrix can either be similar to the fragments, or have a completely different composition. Its name comes from Italian, and means “loose gravel” or “stone made by cemented gravel”. Breccia has a number of different origins, ranging from sedimentary, igneous, and impact, to tectonic, intrusive, and hydrothermal.
Regardless of its origins however, its unique and striking appearance has made Breccia an extremely popular sculptural and architectural material for thousands of years. The Romans considered it a precious stone and used it in high-profile public buildings, such as the Pantheon in Rome. It was also used as the column bases for the Minoan palace of Knossos, on the island of Crete, around 1800 BC.
Each rock or mineral specimen measures approximately 1-2 inches in length along its longest side.
