Description

This hydrolysis apparatus is a simple and effective demonstration kit to demonstrate that electrically conductive liquids, such as water, can be broken down into their base components by passing an electrical current through the liquid  The gaseous components that are formed can be trapped, and their relative volumes can be measured.

The two graduated glass test tubes sit inside the long arms of the glass H-unit, just above the platinum electrodes, to collect gas that is produced during electrolysis.  The electrodes themselves are partially enclosed in glass, with an attached wire lead that protrudes on the other side for a power source to be attached to.  Around the glass tube that contains the electrode are size 1 rubber stoppers, which ensure that a tight seal is created at the bottom of the H-unit so that liquid and gas cannot escape.  The entire apparatus attaches to a 18″ support rod, which is attached to a 4″ x 8″ base.

Included:

  • 2 glass graduated test tubes (graduated to 14mL)
  • 1 glass H-unit
  • 2 platinum electrodes w/lead wire and stoppers
  • 1 single clamp to hold the H-unit to the support rod
  • 1 4″x8″ support stand
