Hoffman Electrolysis Apparatus w/Stand & Clamps
Â
The electrolysis apparatus is used to demonstrate that electrically conductive liquids, such as water, can be broken down into their base components by passing an electrical current through the liquid. The gaseous components that are formed are then trapped, and their relative volumes can be measured.
The glassware of this unit is a single piece. The reservoir extends down the middle of the H-unit, connecting at the crosspiece that holds both of the verticle tubes together. A stopcock rests at the top of the outside tubes on the H-unit, to manually expel the gas. The tubes are also graduated up to 50mL, with divisions every 0.2mL. The base of these two tubes is open to accommodate a size 1 rubber stopper, where the electrodes are mounted.
Each platinum electrode is connected to a wire lead sealed within a glass tube. From one end the electrode protrudes slightly, and the wire leads from the other so that they can be connected to posts on the base, and then have a current passed through them.
The stand is a 5×8″ base with two electrical posts for connecting the electrodes to a power source. The rod is 24″ in length, and easily accommodates the two clamps that are needed to hold the electrolysis apparatus upright. Overall height of apparatus is 32 inches.
*Please note that the base of this item is actually a 5×8″ rectangle
