Malachite Mineral – Pack of 2
by American Educational Products
A copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, malachite is typically found in opaque shades of green. It takes on botryoidal, or grape bundle, textures, as well as stalagmitic and fibrous masses. Usually hematite is found deep underground, where both the water table and hydrothermal fluids can provide it with the ability for chemical precipitation.
Archaeological evidence has shown that malachite has been mined and smelted for copper for over 3,000 years in Timna Valley, Israel. It has seen use as an ornamental stone, gemstone, and a mineral paint pigment. Due to its sensitivity to acids and varying color, its use as a pigment stopped around the year 1800. It is still occasionally used for decorative purposes.
Each rock or mineral specimen measures approximately 1-2 inches in length along its longest side.
