A variety of quartz, Agate tends to be characterized by the fineness of its grain and the brightness of the colors found within it. While they can be found in different kinds of rock, they are typically associated with those of volcanic origins, as they tend to form within the cavities of ancient lava and volcanic rock, where siliceous (silica-based) matter was deposited in regular layers.
Agate is extremely resistant to weathering, and as such finds widespread use in the making of pins, paper knives, marbles, and seals. Capable of being highly polished, it is also used for leather burnishing tools, and as mortars and pestles to crush and mix chemicals.
