Petrified wood is parts of trees that have been buried under sediment for a very long time and minerals have slowly replaced the plant matter, turning the wood to stone instead of decaying. This process is called permineralization and is one of many interesting processes that occur naturally on earth. The petrified wood fossils are composed of cryptocrystalline silicon dioxide, and some pieces may even show visible spots of crystal quartz growth.
