Marble is metamorphosed limestone. When limestone is subjected to high temperature and pressure due to movements in the Earth’s crust, the crystal structure of the limestone is squeezed and packed tightly together.The end result is marble; a more dense, durable and decorative material than the limestone from which it came.

Pure marble is white because its main component is white calcite. Other minerals may also be present in limestone before it is metamorphosed, causing it to have various colors and patterns. Marble is relatively soft and takes a high polish making it a favorite material used by sculptors such an Michelangelo. This beautiful 4 inch globe has been sculpted from a lovely black and gray marble and polished to a high sheen.
