Sometimes known as arenite, Sandstone is a sedimentary rock. Specifically, a clastic sedimentary rock, as it is composed of fragments, or clasts, of pre-existing materials. In this case, sand-sized grains of rocks and/or minerals. It features Liesengang banding, or rings, which are colored bands that are distinguishable from other structures by their concentric, or ring-like, appearance.
Sandstone is fairly porous, which not only allows water and other fluids to filter through it, but it can also store large quantities of those fluids. This makes them extremely valuable as aquifers and petroleum reservoirs.
It can vary in color, much like sand, though some of the most commonly found colors are tan, brown, yellow, red, grey, pink, white, and black. The color of the sandstone can help identify what region it may have come from.
Each rock or mineral specimen measures approximately 1-2 inches in length along its longest side.
