CAS # 112926-00-8 (Synthetic amorphous silica gel), 7646-79-9 (Cobalt chloride)
A granular, vitreous, and porous form of silicon dioxide that has been created synthetically from sodium silicate, Silica gel is a tough and hard little bead. It is more solid than common gels found in the home like gelatin or agar, with a strong affinity for water molecules. Typically, it is used as the drying agent in the bottom of desiccators in a laboratory setting.
This silica gel has had Cobalt chloride added to it, giving it a deep blue color. As it is exposed to, and absorbs moisture from the surrounding environment to control the relative humidity, the color of the silica beads will change to pink as they move from the activated to saturated condition.
It can be reconstituted by moving it to a closed container, cutting it off from the moisture.
This chemical is for laboratory use only, and is not intended for food, drug, or cosmetic use. It should be kept out of the reach of children. Each bottle of our reagents come standard with a copy of an SDS sheet (an updated version of the discontinued MSDS sheet). If you require a copy of this prior to purchase, please contact us.
