A white solid in pellet form, Sodium hydroxide is also known as lye, or caustic soda. An alkaline salt, it is a highly caustic base. While it is insoluble in non-polar solvents, Sodium hydroxide is highly soluble in both ethanol and methanol, and is extremely soluble in water.
