A chief ore of zinc, in typically consists of zinc sulfide in a crystalline form, with a variable form of iron. Sphalerite has also been referred to by miners as zinc blende, black-jack, and ruby jack. It can be found in the colors of brown, yellow, red, green, and black. The iron content of the sphalerite is a determining factor in its coloring, darkening it as the content increases.
Sphalerite specimens found in a large size with suitable transparency have found a use as gemstones, though due to their soft and fragile nature they are typically left unset, and used as a collector’s or museum piece.
Each rock or mineral specimen measures approximately 1-2 inches in length along its longest side.
