These tumbled petrified algae fossil stones came from stromatolites (mounds made by repeated layers of microbes and sediment) dating back to the Precambrian era. After being buried underneath sediment for very long periods of time, the algae permineralized into deep, red colored jasper. The black “cracks” are likely to be hematite and the white or clear “cracks” are likely to be quartz that filled in where the sediment was deposited.
